The diets were carefully constructed to be equal in calories, protein, carbs, and fiber, but different in the type of dominant fatty acid. Continuation of their regular diet, a PUFA-rich polyunsaturated fat acid diet with extra fish and soy oils,

1:07including roughly 33% of their fats, were polyunsaturated. A MUFA-rich diet with extra-extra virgin olive oil, roughly 50% of their fats were monounsaturated. After two months, the MUFA group was the only one with significant and fat loss and a slimmer waist circumference. The MUFA group had significantly better body composition outcomes than the regular diet group, but not significantly compared to the PUFA group. These findings may seem like heresy to some, but how can you lose fat without a change in energy intake?

1:41Well, there's always potential for self-reporting energy intakes to be wrong. We see that a lot. But in this case, there are multiple studies now supporting fat loss and some kind of advantages in the mechanisms of MUFAs and PUFAs compared to saturated fats, the strongest evidences for greater diet-induced thermogenesis. You see, unsaturated fats cause a greater increase in energy expenditure during their digestion, just like protein.

2:07And multiple studies have found this. Some does claim that the difference is insignificant. A previous systematic review also found promise in fat loss mediated by lower inflammation, increased AMPK signaling, and possibly appetite suppression. But who knows for sure if these mechanisms are related or not to a greater thermic effect. In the end, energy balance has to apply.
