Introduction
0:00welcome to bear mountain bc.com stock dog philosophies podcast i'm your host ty spanky barrett and joining me as always is justin sugar barrett yeah my brother just sugar barrett and we have our dad buford i'm here all right and so this is a very special number 48 edition special christmas day edition okay our very first video podcast we're going to do a run break down here
Run Breakdown
0:31we have about 25 minutes worth of runs from the past several years we're going to look at right here let me get the video started i'm just down this page for a second and so we'll walk through these we're going to stop and pause at times as well and we'll stop and pause we'll walk through just talk through some stuff here we've got several mostly dad's runs uh we have one of justin's maybe two i believe yeah then we'll kind of go through there so yeah we'll get started in just a second this pulls up about 25 minutes with the videos we'll stop and pause and do all that
Carmy's Run
1:05good kind of stuff but yeah bear mountain border collies here we go this is carmy in 2019 wow this is a ways back this is two years look at the cloud right here yeah she really slowed down after the puppies i can really hear her well yeah so what do you what do you think right there removed kind of slow but that's just how
1:39she is at this point that's the way she was yeah it's a good lift i mean good outrun she's just slow i mean that that's what eventually retired her we just yeah and the judge for this was dang shillings yeah this was uh i mean this is kind of a unique trial because it's such a small arena there's quite a few people there at this yeah um and the sheep can get into the stands very easily yeah there's just a foot tall little wall there it's concrete the rest of those are pretty that had happened before um it's tough with these because when you get offline at all you're in
2:13trouble you have no panels don't push them back in those posts don't do a whole lot there's not much cross drive as you can see so to catch these kind of flightier sheep especially that being these woolies they're generally flightier it's tough in a little bit spot but carmy's so calm and controlled she handles them really really nice sneaks them in through the post will make me a liar right there they clear yeah yeah she just that's just a nice job yeah you know it's like losing them on the end of the drive came back inside came back inside yeah don't want to do that folks
2:47i think it came back in front of them they did yeah it's got a hard television they did it i don't know who's filming this one but i'm thinking i'm filming it but i could be wrong you guys are lazy so now he's working on pinning working on pinning these are tough to pin this is just the three-sided pin so there is no gate you're just pretty much stuck on the side you are yeah and i believe there's not
3:18even a rope so you're just kind of got your area yeah it's kind of and they weren't really afraid of us that was a another problem i can't i don't remember a whole lot about this run i mean that was so long ago you're gonna tell me don't remember every run you had no no i definitely don't either just kind of fun about what one of the reasons i want to start with you you're gonna see right here this is she's she was slow but this is why uh carmy did so well most of the time is because she just brought everything nice calm cool it doesn't affect them a whole lot right she's just
3:53kind of nice and soft off of them so even in this tighter area she does yeah pretty solid let's see
Spice's Run
3:59kind of a disparity here in the next run that jess is going to have uh with spice now you're trying to back her out she feel like she's a little too tight that was one of her but usually she was such a good pinner i didn't uh yeah this is one of the rare cases this is one of the last trials she probably ever ran too yeah yeah tom and roose was probably this year probably one of the last she ran because i don't think she ran in 2021 she ran at kelly's the first time we had it and she didn't lose a point on the outrun lift and fetch and she hadn't really lost a point on the drive and we
4:31ran out of time yeah and susan goes she hadn't lost a point and i go yeah but we can't finish any of it yeah we just it's so slow uh yeah that's kind of what's happening here just being patient at the pen that's really a huge part to this just being patient and i can't remember if we got this pen eventually or not you do eventually get the pen that we had i don't have a ton of time left for the the shed um they gave plenty of time this trial to get this done that's for sure yeah that's for sure yeah didn't go quickly through the course and then i think justin might have forever today to
5:06try to shed here this may have been the last one that danny shilling judged i can't yeah because after this would have been 21 to post covid one i don't know if he was there post covid was he that was the last time he went when justin got sick last time he was still a judge the last time i went to he may have judged the bob rose cattle trial after this maybe so now they're all in right this one about to take that last step in the pen's clean there there's no gate to shut for this one again it's a three-sided pen now he comes out trying to shed i think you're feeling
5:39you probably don't have a ton of time you're walking pretty briskly yeah is that one of your original red shirts that you've had to retire yes it's the one i just retired yeah i had it for a long time he's got a new red hat though yeah he's got a new we've all got matching sooner shirts we can uh look good together we all get matching hats we all can have different preferences for hats that's kind of a it makes it a little tougher doesn't it yeah these things don't settle good they're like on top of
6:13your knees that's one of the worst things time right out there now here comes sugar with spice running up the wall he sends into their heads any thoughts on that uh it was what i thought would work better to bring them straight down the fit make the lift better because that immediate turn if they got settled was dead towards me yeah if you come with their butts they might push a little bit a little bit off heads you can hopefully just turn them straight this was after spice had already won for it worse so spice was quick she's got a little bouncy right here that's that's the big difference especially on these sheep in a small arena uh
6:46carmy doesn't push a ton spice does you can see the difference how the sheep react and there's a speed level yeah yeah she beat them to the point squeeze them and then we're about to have some bad you got the speed uh beat you on anything you want and and she's probably gonna turn make the make the panels i'm gonna assume or the poles because the cameraman who is ty yeah i think this would be probably probably was i messed up here well we think you made the pain
7:16he can say he did or he say he didn't we'll never know we'll never know the world i don't know if we can ever look that up i guess we should look that up probably not probably not a way to look it up why does it save somewhere i doubt it finishes i doubt it get some of the pen this is what i always say with the pen the best shot you have is the first one is the first one yeah because you're coming in especially with this setup like the cross draw like that you're looking in the mouth of the pen the whole time you have your dog in a pretty good spot um so your best shot's the first one after that it's gonna be pretty hard he guess i guess
7:49just got him in there coming out just broke the plane to come on tons oodles of time here to get the shed like well justin just take it over from here it's his run walk us through it she's a little tight pushing i don't know what you're expecting me to tell you uh i probably just thought well we're gonna sit out here and circle for a while because i don't think we're getting a split but there was only one shed i think this critique yourself this i think it was a different year the next year maybe
8:20now there was probably only one or two and the sheep are tough they're on your knees and trying to find a space to get it in and have the dog turn in with this without causing the pressure to make them keep circling like this was going to be really difficult to do and i'm fairly certain i do not get the shed but crazier things have happened um so just watching is there anything you think that you're you've learned doing the shed
8:50now that you didn't do back then or just critique yourself in that way get her off more sometimes it's like her would be pushing her off there to get her out so we could get it done um there's a couple things i have learned better with it but it's just really it's a finesse thing you got to work on and truly teaching the dog to come through quickly through it and it's just not easy i think i've learned more now to kind of help the dog sometimes to get the shed done yeah and kind
9:23of force my way in a little bit to break them to split them but like at this point i wasn't willing to do that i thought the dog should come in and do it and i'm not going to do anything to help it happen and so that makes a big difference for me and that's why i think we struggled with it more we're gonna have lots of time here just to sit here and watch me go in circles i bet yeah probably there's not a guarantee that we don't get it but we know this is a few years ago because justin's physique has changed
9:55thanks dad two children have really changed it i'm just saying yeah thanks thanks and dad's shirt you wore the same one for till last month all right yeah his didn't change at all hey once you get a good look keep yeah i think we're just gonna watch it go in circles over and over and over again i'm getting a little dizzy i guess i could fast forward maybe i should watch the videos and edit out some of this
10:30yeah see you go a little faster speed it up yeah you could have done that but now we're just i feel like circles is there anything you feel like you could have done different right here to try to get this shit done no no this wasn't gonna happen i don't where spice was was shedding and like i said i think oh so like now if you put yourself now right there could you figure this out got him to stop and work maybe it these would have been tough to shed either way i could have yeah uh like i said i think if i remember this right there was only one shed in this whole class
11:04and they didn't win the class they weren't even in placing so i guess kevin lippy got the shed you think he got it i was thinking it was larry it was uh larry birch larry birch okay here we go
Knox's Winter Trial
11:16this is i don't know i wouldn't this is at the knox's winter trial this this spring uh where dad had this tater running obviously yeah um but we went to the knox's trial this last this march doing it in there this is where i'm in a jacket because somebody forgot their coat and had to use my other jacket so i was gonna have two jackets on he was cold i was like freezing death there was windy and cold it looks warm it ain't it wasn't it was misery i mean he had a good outrun he had a
11:48just a perfect lift so uh i agree and he's bringing them dead center so there's yeah coming down broadway i'd say right there yeah this is in the field where they do the parking for the knox's trial not the field they use for the open that they do in the fall this is where you park at usually the parking is more to your right so this is in the section people aren't parked supposed to be the only parking in of it but it's that field yeah yeah and this is all their yearling and so uh training replacement use so one thing i want to kind of point out right here um as he's bringing
12:21them dead down the middle his dog's off towards you know if it's going to the left a little bit so when you're working your dog uh you do sometimes you don't want to be down you don't want to be at 12 o'clock all the time right that's not because there's pressure points sometimes it is 11 that gets it done sometimes there's one or two or 10 whatever it may be right there you go good fetch right there through the panels yeah they got to the panels and they didn't want it sheep don't want to go through it usually uh but yeah these these lambs were really a challenge i mean it was fun
12:53yeah definitely i wasn't there so i have no idea can't tell you much about the run um our judge was donna rock for this the crazy thing is when we get at the end of the cross drive we'll discuss the pin location is it extremely unique yes it was describe it but we'll we'll talk about it here and these were not easy pinners so that being the pin being where it was turn made it even tougher so see how he makes this turn it's a good tight turn i don't remember this is the first or the second one because we had one little bobble on the drive one
13:40he's looking over there the exhaust sheep are right there in view so and he does like pin sheep so hey he's getting a little speedy on you there yeah yeah this is the first run so i think yep we got a little out of position turn right there so you over flank you a little bit or did you he did he did he over flanked a little bit but the second run we got we placed on this run but uh the second run we were second and it was just by a point i mean it was so close
14:13because he was almost perfect that second run okay so what were you thinking through going through this cross drive here with uh staying online what were you looking for i just was just wanting to keep them moving he's stopping himself i'm not stopping him i'm trying to keep him up and going i wanted to keep him just going i'm glad that whenever we're doing this now justin is is capable of asking questions and yeah yeah a little bit as you guys will see uh in a couple episodes in our 50th with a very special
14:49great guest um just doesn't really join us much well i was muted sometimes and then i had a phone call i had taken the middle of it um so you know that did affect me a little bit and then i just you were had you had some good questions so hey you know what excuses are hey if he's getting good questions what i need to ask him for good this is a long cross drive it is a really long cross drive for the class that it was what the noxes are known for is a known cross the field we're looking at over there is the field they try to land which is where all the use yeah just running in right now
15:23which is a very unique field was this a no open trial no open no it's just the then he got it turning back a beautifully tight to the right good tight he's working you know you placed here i'm thinking on this run here we were like fifth that bobble on the drive uh cost us and i can't remember if we got them pinned on this run or not i mean it was there wasn't that many pins in this class
15:54i did really enjoy the pin because it could you could set that up to put pull the pins out and you could open the pin either direction yeah so you're allowed to change the gate if you needed to you could pull the pin out any direction is that what you just said well you can pull the pins that hold the gate in change from one side to the other and then you can open the gate from the other side so it's not just the it's always going to open on right to left you can change it and open left right if you want to change it at some point so the pin is has ability to change like ours is you
16:24only can open it one way yeah that one you have the ability to pull the pins and move it to the other side and open them that way what do you think about this there's something in the pin pretty easy it makes it odd coming in that's where i don't i don't love ones like that it was a challenge because it was the point like for you is you got to turn like a 90 degree into it so basically they have to hit that panel and you as a wall and then go down and they weren't one thing you don't want to do is crouch down you want to stand up straight like that and
16:56i got them right in the mouth of it right hey shit right there you could have walked up a little bit more but you want to just let them let them kind of move in themselves make that you want that dog pressure back there where he's at kind of ah yeah yeah so he did i don't think he yeah that cost you how did you not pin them right there dad come on man these were really really tough to pin that was what's crazy and you can't do any crouching if you crouch down on them they will blow out of there they're good at standing like right there they think they'd be decently easy to pin so stand
17:29right there in the front but they just don't want to go in they're looking to go past you like watching them their eyes it's like they don't see it there's so much different than that it was so much different than pinning the hair sheep that the second run we pinned them just walked them right in but this one we had a little more trouble and like i said tater is a really good pinner so it tells you how tough these were that's time that's time nope and we still
18:07this is angie's this year um i have back-to-back runs of this coming up oh this is your filming so yes i didn't even see these runs oh really we did fairly well these are probably the bad runs where i made i messed up and it didn't get you a good one because you were i was gone i think filming or watching the one we won he didn't get he didn't film mine bad he still got yeah i was like uh he's not gonna do good first it is i'm gone good look at the great film right there close-up footage of the dog
18:38i mean i missed the left she broke a little bit they want to go that way covering got covered so what's uh what's going through your head right here i'm just wanting to keep them dead down the center and we're not a little off there we're not we're not there turn them and get them back down just in time you turn them get a man that's one thing about the panels that helps is typically if you can just cover a little bit they'll break it's a good barrier so the way it looks like on your camera that lady's way closer than what she
19:12actually is in real life like that's like a pretty 200 plus yards and she looks like she's like 20 yards 20 yards away yeah like maybe 50 yards behind those panels but it's not the case this is the first run i think he got third in this yeah and you lost a good amount of points there on the yeah yeah that's where fetch you're just kind of offline for most of it
19:37is your hurry use they like to run a little bit as opposed to the other field you have the lambs that don't like to really move at all you gotta lean and push these guys you really just don't want to lean on yeah good nice patient work but you don't want to be this is kind of something i think is really important um circle the post that is a challenge sometimes sometimes you know they want to break one way to catch them send your dog back in front of the post uh this is where he starts to shine because he really drives well yeah this is where natural ability takes him a little bit more
20:13because i gotta carry a little more uncomfortably on the drive got him running a little bit right now he's a little more bouncy than usual but yeah about that speed right there is where i want to keep my sheep if i can keep them doing that we can go straight anywhere yeah and so with this uh these episodes today we're gonna try to do some more maybe just full episodes like this maybe sometime in the future we'll just do some
20:46some segments where we have just one run or we'll do some training pieces we record we can stop and break down and talk about but i gotta keep this at all hopefully you like these episodes then we know dad's short there because the trees are good yeah it'll be a little here you gotta be behind them to be online um it's really helpful how those kind of indicators the good thing is the judge didn't know it because nobody had been online even close we were the closest yeah you were pretty early in the day at this point like 10 or 12 or something like that about 60 yeah and nobody had been that
21:19close yeah he went a little far on me before i get him stopped so we're now right on she's kind of walking a little weird kind of hobbling at one in the front yeah yeah those are things you want to look at those things you want to be kind of thinking about as you're coming around so again justin what should your focus be when you're working the sheep the sheep right you want to focus on the sheep not only your dog as much we got them back online so we're going to turn them oh this is where
21:49you had to bring them back to the fetch stand yeah they've got a well they got like a red flag out there we'll see in a second and then that's where you want to turn hit that little red flag and then turn in what are you talking about you didn't bring them to the shoot you brought them to a spot out there the first day was bringing them to the stand and then second day they put a red flag out there to bring them to so that's a red flag we just can't see it right about there is where the red flag is yeah or where it's supposed to be i think this is where i give you the wrong flank on the pin
22:23that cost us the win yeah can pinning just like one little misstep get you in a bad spot and again this is tight you can't just walk them straight in there and you're blocking you're on the opposite side of the wing too which is a ideal really i mean you got them just down broadway here kind of where's the shoot system right there i heard it i gave the wrong flank i want to pause and we'll just see if we can get back to it i'm gonna see him right here i give the wrong flank he lays down and then i flank him the
22:57wrong way he goes that way and i do so right here i i think it's the next one i give him the wrong flank i fast forward actually oh yeah no that one went right through but the one before i gave the wrong flank you can see him turn his head and that's what caused the them going by back it on up right there yeah you can see it and and yeah it's i don't do it often but i did there
23:30and i knew it when i see him kind of move a little bit to the to the right first and then yeah that's all that's all it took i mean we haven't covered you that one you can see was about to go through you covered the other two yeah two cost you a little bit maybe you would have won first if it doesn't happen like that's the one yeah i think so looking at the scores i figure that's yeah and just look at the crouch coming in just good pace looking at their eyes all the things you want and hopefully with this uh segment too we can
24:04have on some guests and have them kind of walk through their runs as well right that's kind of a goal that we have through this as well it's not just us talking yeah again we have a very this is episode 48 and uh releasing on new year's day we have a very special guest for a 50th episode here's dad again in the rain on the saturday morning
Saturday Morning Run
24:30the sheep come back out of the exhaust so this is it cost me but yeah this is i'm gonna pause just for a second i should keep going um this is a good lesson to learn like wait till the sheep are off the field he sends he catches the sheep out of the corner of his eye there um off the exhaust of that way so i had to stop i'll probably mess up the film of saying you're an idiot you just cost yourself i had to stop him and get my redirect i had to stop him tell him look back and redirect which was six points yeah i get a several points you're missing right there and that's a close run
25:05you have a really solid run after that yeah behind i can also see me and my jacket back there underneath the awning it just so it's sat now i was helping helping run the pins kick out that she kind of left a little bit but you were took so long to have to hold them because you took extra time on that outrunner yeah so but we still finished pretty high i mean it wouldn't you get them back down broadway right down the middle they're coming see the rain too it's coming down pretty good right here it's coming down pretty good right this time hood's down
25:38how's that middle crook in the rain there it's not bad where it's bad you really notice it is when it's cold did we switch the drive and cross drive i don't think so they did they might have last day i think they did the last day so we're still gonna have that right hand drive again just kind of watch uh what happens here at the post it's always a a challenge you happen to cover all the way over here then get all the way back around watch the work tater does here oh we had to really cover these because
26:10they took off when they turned especially come you see like they hear in the exhaust right here they take off if i'm right yeah so we went way way too far yeah i was trying to get him to come back in a little bit that's one of the things that's really delicate as a handler turn to the post you tend to take it for granted like oh the sheep are out my feet this is an easy part but it's it's not it takes maybe the most uh precision really to make a good tight turn you can make it wide there we brought them back
26:43online back to it and then yeah especially the precision of just making sure that you're there where you want to be and you get it turned the proper kind of way tater got a lot of compliments this weekend that weekend so this is our our last run of this a lot of people had lost them to the wrong side of the gate and had really wide turns right there and he had good turns well you can see that the pressure point for all that was the whole time was going towards the right so you had
27:17to cover the right but you didn't want to cover it so hard that you just pushed them past on the left hand side so you're playing and so that's what the post and all the panels kind of have this mixture you have to take care of as a handler of uh i have to hit it but i'm also going to set myself up for the rest of the run so you're kind of balancing right now and the future it's a tough task to do um so you'll be really really quick on some of those stuff why whistles are so important again solid drive kind of like the first one you went down a little bit low and then
27:50you kind of bounce back and straight down the middle um you see that red flag right there now just yep it's there now that's where you want to take the sheep to um and then work your way to the shoot from there we'll uh continue to dig through the archives maybe with another one of these for episode we have quite a few of them on like youtube you have some others yeah i just kind of screen record those or whatever and get them up for us we just pull that up
28:23um and then we can watch some work do some training stuff as well so i think it's our very special 50th spectacular episode again you got them looking at a really good spot right here they're coming in a line which is good for the shoot um you don't want them all bunched up really because they all can't fit through there that way yeah so you're gonna get long to turn his head you do and just like that
28:53nail the run yeah so we've watched
Post-Run Discussion
28:58quite a bit here okay uh what are your thoughts after watching some of these old runs from mav some old ones oh man so what are your thoughts after that our first one of these at the post what do you think uh looking back at yourself you just need to go here first because you had just one run any uh complaints or compliments to your former self you know i had to give a lot uh spices she was a fun dog to run and placed
29:31consistently well a lot of times she had a lot of speed had the quickness to get save you if you made mistakes so you didn't have to always you can stay on schedule and i had to have plans going into what i wanted to do with her at a trial and we could stay on script for the most part even if we had a little boggle we could get back on script very quickly yeah um so that's a slightly difference of running her to woodrow is i simply have stuff planned out for woodrow but we kind of have to just flow and have less
30:01of a this is what we're doing and i flow more with him i try to make it more of a flow and just kind of go through it with him and with her it was just like okay so what i want to do this is where the pressure points are we're just going to attack it this way and go and just do it and that was great with her as long as she was listening which was most of the time and so i probably retired her too soon but it was i also never did trial her at the level or the space i did have with woodrow yeah that was one of the biggest mysteries of barrett mountain history is why
30:34you took two-year-old woodrow to angie's when you had eight-year-old spice and won a bunch yeah yeah like that one it's just like you got a better day or even like day two and three why you didn't didn't make a change you know i don't know he sticks to his guns on that one he sticks he did a dance with the one that brung him that's the plan you know he's gonna dance with the one that brung him i wanted to give him a test and you know jump out there with him and
31:04uh it didn't go well and that was the start of our long struggle that him and i have been through where it's taken us a long time to get to where we are and now at eight years old finally breaking through finally breaking through it just took long enough all right dad what about you what are some thoughts from these runs uh well i could see now why i retired carmy but it was like i said it was i always placed high with her because she took care of you just like she showed there i mean you're you're you're not losing many points
31:35yeah she's gonna handle the stock really nice even even in tough situations like that and uh with tater uh that really showed where my mistakes cost us uh because i thought he worked as good as he could work and even on the the one where you're seeing the exhaust sheet i got him stopped and turned around and looked back but yeah so yeah all right well this has been uh episode 48 our first of these we'll call this maybe at the post or behind the post something like that
32:08um episodes we kind of looked through some runs with these hopefully you enjoyed it and uh thank you guys so much you um yep far um yep up yep yep yep yep yep yep yep yep oh yep yep yep
