Show notes

In this episode of Two Strike Noise, Jeff and Mark explore the career of one of the most efficient pitchers in baseball history: Addie Joss. Known for his "corkscrew" delivery and a career ERA that remains the second-lowest of all time, Joss's life was cut short at just 31. The hosts detail the incredible 1911 Addie Joss Benefit Game, which brought together icons like Ty Cobb (in a borrowed jersey), Walter Johnson, and Cy Young for a cause that predated the official MLB All-Star Game by over two decades. Before the history lesson, the BP segment covers the recent passing of Tigers legend Mickey Lolich, a strange trivia bit about Ozzy Smith’s fashion sense, and a look at Hall of Famers categorized by their home states. The episode concludes with a high-stakes round of Wax Pack Heroes, where Frank Robinson leads a 2003 Topps pack. 00:00 Intro: The Domingo Ramos Studio & "Ham Gravy" Origins 02:15 Non-Baseball Fact: Olive Oil and the Usurping of Popeye 04:30 BP Segment: Remembering Mickey Lolich (The Beer Drinker’s Idol) 08:50 1987 Tops Trivia: Ozzy Smith, Best Casual Dresser? 11:15 The "Other" Ozzy: Canseco’s Stint with the Cardinals 14:40 Hall of Famers by State: New York vs. California 19:20 WBC Woes: Insurance Issues and Javi Baez’s Suspension 23:05 The Human Hairpin: The Dominance of Addie Joss 38:40 Wax Pack Heroes: 2003 Topps Mega Pack Battle 54:20 Wrapping Up: Mickey Lolich Deep Dive Tease Connect With Us YouTube: www.youtube.com/@twostrikenoise Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/twostrikenoise BlueSky: @twostrikenoise.bsky.social Email: twostrikenoise@gmail.com Support a Great Cause: Don't let your common cards collect dust! 0:00hello everybody welcome to another episode of two strike noise your mom's third favorite we fluctuate a lot with your mom you need to talk to her about that but third favorite baseball history podcast my name is jeff joining me as always the second half of the show from the pacific northwest in the domingo ramos studio today domingo forking over that cash to get his

0:34name on the studio it's mark a johnston hey yeah domingo a nice guy he always wants a discount but at least he pays yeah he's the only one that is actually giving us money to put his name on this studio yeah hey 10 bucks is 10 bucks that's it if anybody else wants their name on our studio that's the going price uh let's talk about well you know what and you and i literally just talked about this before we started recording our non-baseball fact of the day i don't know this

1:05led us into the tombstone names a couple of weeks ago so maybe it'll do it again this i learned this literally this is a today i learned olive oil all right popeye's girlfriend yes she was a character 10 years before popeye was okay she was introduced in 1919 in a comic strip called thimble theater i think you remember that one you used to tape those to your ice box all the time i would tape them to my locker at school i'm a lot younger than you think i was okay i thought ice

1:41box like there weren't refrigerators there were no the ice box was uh a little more challenging than the refrigerator i remember yeah but she was a love interest of a character named harold ham gravy which who doesn't like ham gravy i am in love with ham gravy a rum ham and some ham gravy together are even better but popeye was introduced in 1929 in the same strip apparently and just bogarted the whole spotlight it says usurping its original star so i want to say that because i like the word usurp

2:15he usurped and took his love interest so this leads me to believe is next week are we going to have popeye themed baseball names oh boy that's it that's the whole list yeah yeah exactly exactly all right let's get into our bp segment here before we get too far into this i think we would be remiss without mentioning the passing this happened just on thursday i believe mickey lolich tiger's legend passed away so we want to mention him i was gonna mention him a little bit more but as i was prepping

2:47for this i decided you know what this guy needs to have a whole episode so there you go next week we will be talking more about licky licky licky licky molich wow i can go so many directions with that that was now welcome to my dyslexic adhd riddled brain i see that as licky molich which sounds like this is a disney character i think isn't it i went porn name and you went disney it's

3:19so the way this show rolls that's right but he was a left-hander for the tigers i liked this because he called himself the beer drinker's idol because of his portly stamina and build and so i looked him up he's listed as 6-1-1-70 oh okay very portly yeah i wouldn't mind being 6-1-1-70 i wouldn't mind it either but he is famous for winning three complete games in the 1968 world series of which

3:49he was named nvp including a decisive game seven that he obviously won the game against bob gibson when they faced the cardinals in the world series three-time all-star runner-up to the 1971 cy young award and retired in 1979 with 2832 strikeouts which was the major league record at that time for a left-hander oh wow so mickey lolich if you want to know more about him wait till next week

4:21because i've already decided he is my topic for next week he is a fun character 68 cy young awards was a tough one yeah 71 was when he was the runner-up but 68 yeah it's hard to i guess 31 and 6 denny mcclain in the 1.12 era of bob gibson yeah good luck getting in there anywhere believe it or not that was before my time i get a lot of i get a lot of old jokes on here but i wasn't around in 68 yet really you weren't i thought you were i thought you were older than i wasn't either but i thought you

4:55were like a lot not a lot but i thought you were like five years older than i was i don't know why just because i make fun of your age stop thinking that i don't know we know executive producer mitch's hair was around at that point yeah just not on his head still has hair it's human hair that they weave in yeah it just it wasn't he wasn't around to farm it at that point so mitch if you're listening you got the best weave on the planet man the harlem globetrotters are jealous of your weave mitch joke for one person there you go all right you go i saw this on the back first of all we love

5:311987 tops right wood border i love it everybody's favorite set absolutely fun fact on the back of aussie smith's 87 tops he was listed as the best casual dresser who voted on this best casual dresser best casual dresser who was voting on it like i have a lot of questions about this but i just want to know who voted on it that's interesting now was it work casual or just casual i see i got

6:03a bunch of questions i don't know pulled into a meeting once and told you dress too casual i'm like it's casual friday yes but it's work casual and i'm like oh my gosh okay sorry i wore the he hate me jersey the las vegas outlaws is that who that was i don't even i think it was i'm not sure where that came from that was okay trust me don't you don't want to test me on xfl knowledge that is literally the extent of my knowledge but you don't want to test me on that i was in an xfl fantasy league okay wow all right by week three we had all quit because none of us were watching the games

6:39but the fact is i drafted okay that's what matters i remember week one i thought that was the coolest thing watching it but i was also drunken in a strip club watching it so anything that would have been on that tv would have been i wouldn't have been watching a whole lot of it but whatever i saw of it would have been awesome you were casual fan i was i was dressed casually dressed yes speaking of aussies and i have no recollection of aussie canseco playing anywhere other than the a's but he played for the cardinals for two seasons you remember that i don't i mean it was 15 games

7:16total but still over two seasons the cardinals are like this guy might if i guess you're thinking if he could be half of his brother yeah that's a good enough for a fourth outfielder but he only played 15 games total versus the nine that he played as an a so nice you didn't play a lot but aussie was kicking around professional baseball until 2014 at the age of 49 no kidding very similar to his brother but he played a lot in the united baseball league which is a 14 league in texas where he was

7:52the model of consistency he would hit 200 wouldn't hit a home run strike out a lot and not walk i might have been able to pull that off myself i mean is he a draw i come see aussie canseco this week at podunk texas yes it's him and the comedian that makes all the funny noises on space balls space balls or police academy both kevin both kevin winslow was that his name i think

8:24he's winslow i know is his last name isn't that a tight end for the san diego yeah the san diego chargers kellen winslow that's okay yeah i was close i did again football and me yeah super bowl this weekend you don't think i'm excited we can talk about all this on our football podcast yes and or our human sound effects podcast podcast hall of famers by state i saw this popped up somewhere the the number of hall of famers by state what state do you think has the most hall of famers

8:57has produced the most hall of famers that that's a good question let me go with virginia no not even close six okay six six the state with the highest amount of hall of famers produced is new york that would make sense with 27 followed closely by california with 26 and then it gets a little murky then we're in illinois with 17 and maryland with 14 i guess pennsylvania has 22 i don't want to leave

9:29that out oh yeah but there are some odd ones here a couple of states that don't have any but have a high collective career war like alaska but alaska is pretty high because kurt schilling was apparently born in anchorage oh okay i don't know if they want to claim him or not but i he's not going to do that that is actually higher than the collective average of both montana and utah oh wow in war

10:01the states though that had one i want to see if you can guess who these were this one i knew and i think i've mentioned it before there's been one hall of famer from idaho do you know who that is not coming to mind that would be harman killebrew oh sure okay he was born in payette which is something i talked to him about when i interviewed him because that's a fact that i knew other states

10:32one hall of famer how about south dakota oh boy that's funny because i was thinking of south dakota but i can't i don't know not as a player but they went in as a manager it was sparky anderson sparky's from south dakota yep he was born in bridgewater interesting and then the other one how about vermont only one hall of famer and this one i i guess if you listen to the the 88 tops podcast you would probably know this one for sure moonlight in vermont i don't know carlton fisk

11:05okay yeah so those are the states with one hall of famer alabama has got 12 hall of famers and a very high baseball reference war but they have got willie mays satchel page ozzie smith hank aaron henry aaron there's some big names yeah wow from alabama makes sense yeah there you go those guys last thing i want to mention here is wbc a little bit less exciting because of insurance

11:41really a lot of names are not going to be able to play especially for team puerto rico francisco lindor carlos correa and javi baez couldn't get insurance yeah so they can't play which sucks that those are three all that's a all-star yeah one three right to the team right there absolutely yeah now javi baez even if he had insurance couldn't make it now he's been banned for two years from the world baseball classic he tested positive for marijuana oh that famous drug that really helps you

12:20in baseball yes that is a performance and answer i can tell you if you're trying to write lyrics yeah i can tell you firsthand i suck just as bad at baseball if i'm high as if i'm not high i was i mentioned it on the stream this week adderall is the only drug which is meth was essentially a greenie is the only thing that helps me and it does help me i will absolutely tell you i take adderall before i play baseball it helps me a ton i focused i'm locked in i'm not kicking dandelions or i did get

12:57picked off with the hidden ball trick last year but that was nothing to do with it wow you joined a club of elites there ah yeah i mean you've got to be you've got to be around to be picked off with the hidden ball if i get picked off twice then that's elite company yeah no doubt all right let's let's let the grounds come out and do their thing get us ready and mark this week this is your week this is all your week so i'm gonna hand the reins of the show over to you to tell us about something

13:29we don't know okay i want to talk a little bit about a guy that called the human hairpin aka adrian addy joss addy joss was a pitcher born in 1880 in wisconsin and he died prematurely as most of the guys that i talk about do he grew up in wisconsin and played baseball early on at saint mary's college and at the university of wisconsin by the way just not to interrupt you too much here but hall of famers from wisconsin other than addy joss i don't know burley grimes grandfather of

14:06the not the grandfather the last one grandfathered in of the spitter al simmons kid nichols and that's it okay one and addy joss and now we know and addy joss yeah all right addy after college he pitched in semi-pro ball and he was known for his unique delivery it was corkscrew kind of thing we don't have video of it obviously because this is the 19 like 1901 but it was a deceptive his motion started with his back entirely facing the batter and then he would do this corkscrew and twist and turn and

14:41hide the ball behind his hip until the last possible moment and then he would deliver it and even with this bizarre delivery he had incredible control he threw hard too but anyway before he reached the majors he pitched for the toledo mud hens he won 19 games in 1900 and again in 1901 his success there led to a contract with cleveland and he made his major league debut in 1902 with the cleveland broncos later

15:11renamed the naps the naps who are now the guardians and remained with that franchise his entire big league career this is kind of interesting off the off of the field he worked as a newspaper sports writer during the offseason so very popular one he didn't write about himself because it was the offseason but he knew his way around some sports and he only had a nine season career he was elected into the baseball hall of fame in 1978 by the veterans committee there was a special revel resolution

15:42waived to avoid the usual 10-year career minimum because of his talent and impact they made a special exclusion for him from that rule and so a nine-year career got him in what did he die of he died of tuberculosis meningitis oh i was hope i was hoping i was ready to sing consumption junction what's your function but oh tuberculosis but it's the meningitis kind of throws us off yeah yeah he was only 31 years old so he passed away in 1911 his career era 1.89 the second lowest in major league

16:19history behind only ed walsh all-time leader in whip ratio and the lowest in mlb history was a 0.968 whip he did throw a perfect game he pitched the fourth perfect game in major league baseball history through two no hitters led the american league in era twice 1904 in 1908 and in 1907 he led the league in wins so he never had a losing season at all he just always had he was just a guy that won games

16:51his career was pretty short he was a ground ball and control pitcher he didn't rely on overpowering velocity but he threw hard and he had like i said that weird wind up that was very confusing and used to induce pretty weak contact that way he's remembered as one of the greatest pitchers of the dead ball era and one of the most efficient and dominant of his time his statistical marks will stand out in all-time leaderboards and perfect game remains a celebrated achievement mark you mentioned ed walsh being another hall of fame pitcher but ed walsh is actually the guy that he pitched that

17:26perfect game in 1908 against considered by many to be one of the best pitching duels of all time is coincidental that that you mentioned his name there yeah interesting they were their careers paralleled and they were both absolutely fantastic pitchers in the nine-year career addy won 160 games in the last 97 struck out 920 and 286 games and through 234 complete games of the 286 that he pitched

17:58pretty pretty good as a starter he threw 260 games and he completed 234 of them so mathematics 26 games that he started he did not finish well he also had 45 shutouts yeah that's that is a third of his wins were shutouts it's insane it's incredible oh yeah not the best hitter stole 10 bases in his career i threw that in just for you john nice yeah his career was pretty short but he got here's what happened

18:31the baseball community organized a benefit game in 1911 to support his family following his unexpected death that we mentioned earlier one of the earliest instances of a star player benefit contest in the history of sport okay here's we're going to talk a little bit about the addy joss benefit game because this kind of ended up being the first all-star game he passed away like we said at age 31 he left behind his wife lillian and two young children and he was a very popular teammate and very respected

19:04player and his death was came as a shock across baseball and the entire cleveland naps team traveled to toledo and in fact they were told you better not do this and they threatened to strike rather than play their scheduled road game that's how important this was to them to do this benefit game for his family the local sports writers and cleveland's management organized the game for later that summer and it was going to be the talents of the league's best players in a one-off exhibition

19:35at league park in cleveland on july 24th so the day comes there's 15 281 fans and it's the cleveland knaps joss's team against the all-star team made up of top players from other american league clubs and yeah this is considered the first all-star style game in major league history the real all-star game began i think in 33 and this one was 1911 so a little ahead of its time it brought together a pretty amazing array of talent the all-star roster included multiple players who would later be inducted

20:09into the hall of fame here's a few highlights walter johnston was pitching there smoky joe wood who we've discussed another great pitcher a guy named ty cobb wanted to play and support addy's family eddie collins tris speaker sam crawford home run baker hal chase bobby wallace the list of just great players goes on and on on the cleveland naps you had cy young okay and nap lash away who they were the naps and a rising star whose name was shoeless joe jackson hmm nice he even played and um an

20:46interesting story from the game ty cobb wore a cleveland uniform because his detroit tigers jersey was lost in transit now i read that there was a theory that it might not have been lost he might have just forgotten it that's highly possible you never know he was ty cobb but it also and if you're gonna i apologize if you're gonna say this i read that ty cobb was known for his fierce loyalty to the tigers and so for him to put on another uniform was a big deal that he was not thrilled about yeah i can

21:18imagine anybody would be a little bit put off by that i would think but yeah ty cobb especially he's a tiger cy young started for the naps smoky joe wood started for the all-stars it was very competitive game but the focus was on honoring addy joss and helping his family not so much on winning or losing it was a very big success approximately twelve thousand nine hundred fourteen dollars approximately would you say approximately thirteen thousand was great anyway i don't know how i wrote this

21:48basically thirteen thousand dollars was raised for lillian joss and her children more than double his annual salary at the time and i read that's about four hundred thousand today yes a big chunk of it came from ty cobb who of course we all know was a very wealthy man smart businessman kind of guy the event was described by observers as the greatest tribute ever given a player's memory and it was very significant as i said before sit out as a big tribute to how much people really liked addy and how great of a competitor he was i got some quotes from some newspapers at the time

22:24the cleveland plains dealer the headline under the headline galaxy of stars to be here today it build the match up as a galaxy of stars noting that some of the biggest names in baseball had arrived in cleveland to take part in the tribute to joss's memory it emphasized how extraordinary it was to see how many great players assembled on one field in a single day a site the reporter said and i quote no press agent with all the adjectives in the dictionary could quite do justice to this lineup very well stated that it was respectful they flew the flag at half mass they did play to win

23:00but like i said the emphasis was on raising money the toledo news b had a headline in tears mrs joss speaks of gratitude there was a quote from lillian joss addy's widow and her remarks she expressed profound thanks to anyone involved in the benefit noting she could not express her gratitude in words for the generosity showed her family contemporary coverage like baseball magazine the greatest tribute ever given a player's memory and then that was the wording used by everyone else

23:30the greatest tribute ever given to a player's memory was tossed around after that some interesting highlights before the game coverage included pregame reporting on how the roster came together managers and players managers and coaches all wanted to be a part of it players like walter johnson saying walter said i'll do anything they want for eddie joss's family and that he did the all-star team did defeat the naps five to three in a lively contest newspapers of the period like to note quirky

24:03details like we said about cobwearing the cleveland uniform it says here his was an article i have it says it was lost on the trip but as you say who knows the newspapers treated the addy joss benefit game not just as a charity exhibition but as a historic gathering blending sports reporting with human interest honoring a player whose impact was felt across teams and league lines the plane dealer in toledo news b in particular provided direct quotes and emotional contest context about the events

24:33and the significance to the fans and the joss family elect so there you have it addy joss one of the greats and what we could literally call the very first american league all-star game so i've got a couple of things here about this game because this game is incredible yeah first of all i do want to mention that our buddy germany schaefer was part of this game okay he did not play in the game but he did his comedy routine especially at the beginning of the game but he also did a little bit

25:04he didn't want to take away from what the game was but he was doing his shtick there which we did a whole episode on germany schaefer if you haven't heard it go back and listen to it so i wanted to mention that this is my favorite thing when you told me about this i read about this so there is a panoramic photo taken before this game of everybody involved you know how they used to do with all-star games now they do it like they sit you on that three or four levels like of a team picture but back in this day it was like they'd put their phone on the panoramic thing and do that with it with their

25:38iphones they did that a lot yeah yeah back then it was the all the iphone yeah but what happened is cleveland outfielder jack granny grainy g-r-a-n-e-y i don't know how you say that he stood on the far left of the group which is where the camera began its slow pan and then once he was out of the frame he ran behind the entire line all the way to the far right side so as a result if you look at that photo he is there twice once on the far left and once on the far right that's brilliant i love that

26:13we've have talked about eddie joss before because mark this is right up your and my alley he came up with the joss indicator at one point which was the first electronic scoreboard that gave fans in stadium the balls and strikes and outs along with the lineup which wasn't a thing at that point that's pretty amazing so it's just like i was telling you i think last week i was watching an old cubs game on marquee and they didn't they put their own bug in there but there were times when there was nothing

26:46and it just looked so bare but can you imagine going to a baseball game i guess all of the games i play in there's no indicator anywhere other than the umpire if he's paying attention but just no balls or strikes anywhere but addie joss came up with that and that's pretty awesome was the first one to do that also you mentioned he was a popular sports reporter they gave him his own phone number and people would just call him up and he would answer the phone and it was a very popular thing just kind

27:18of like that jose canseco 800 or 900 number back in the day where he would tell you what really happened when he got so much like that addie joss and jose canseco very similar oh yeah most of the time they get compared especially their physique yeah and if you just look at their pictures on baseball reference they're very similar although addie joss is confusing because addie joss has two pictures on baseball reference one looks straight out of the 1800s high collar and just a hair parted

27:53in the middle and then the second one he looks like he's 104 years old when he died when he was 31 so i don't yeah life was a bit harder back then yeah this is true and this is interesting too i was going to mention the pitching line for the all-stars had you got to see smoky joe wood go two innings and then you got to see walter johnson come in for the next three so that's worth your ticket right there baby yeah was it a full nine inning game it was and cy young went three for the naps the naps

28:28got 15 hits and five runs and the all-stars got only eight hits but they scored more how great of it when you think about there's a question i see like on reddit a lot of times like if you could go back in time and watch one game from the past what would it be and that would definitely that's probably one that people don't think about that often yeah but yeah i know there's a lot of people would like to go back and i know me think about you know of course the 27 yankees and i think about the negro leagues and stuff like that this you're absolutely right this would be one amazing game to

29:01watch yeah what would your game be if you could go back it might be hard to think of it right now maybe we revisit it last week but my like for me my initial thought and i have nothing to do with this game but i would like to go back and see bobby thompson shot heard around the world yeah one i would like to see it or when willie may oh probably willie may is in the catch doesn't matter because it would be at the polo grounds which that's what i would want i would want to watch a game at the

29:31polo grounds yeah yeah no doubt about it so those both rounds being completely classic as far as baseball history is concerned yeah i just i would love to see those short porches and then that just acres and acres of outfield i think my game would probably be nolan ryan's fifth no hitter because it was with the astros and it was against the dodgers and 81 and i would really have enjoyed seeing him in that that 80 80s astros uniform the tequila sunrise yeah yeah that's definitely when

30:06that comes to mind i might change my mind later because there are some all-star games that were pretty impressive including the negro league all-star games so who knows who knows got it all right thank you yeah addy ross why i cannot say his name right rick ross addy joss thank you very much we've talked about him before but that yeah that that game is something else those names and just some of the stories there all right let's see executive producer mitch and that weave are both

30:37they're both waving in different directions which kind of just that weirds me out why is it so windy in there i don't know but that hair just it's crazy let's go ahead because that is the signal that we need to head into the final segment of the show a segment that we like to call and so we will wax pack heroes hello again friends it's time for another installment of wax packs heroes before we can start though let's

31:19go over the rules mark and jeff are going to play an old-fashioned game of war except this is more like baseball reference war they'll each get one card and will score the baseball reference war of the year of the card but wait they can add or subtract points depending on certain aspects of the card and the player's season any 80s baseball aesthetics the card displays will earn an extra tenth of a point or if they don't like something like two and one stirrups they can subtract a tenth of a point as well

31:49also if the player won any awards that season they get a half a point for each if the player led the league in any categories they'll get a tenth of a point for each positive category but minus half a point for each negative one if there's a hall of famer anywhere on the card that's a whole extra point if the player had a costacos brothers poster made of them they get a half a point for that if ricky henderson or nolan ryan get pulled the round is over jeff automatically wins if either pulls a ricky

32:20card and mark wins if nolan is pulled if the player has any pop culture references they get a half a point unless they appeared on seinfeld the simpsons or sabrina the teenage witch that friends is a whole point for each if the player was suspended for off the field mischief during their career or are on the 2sn don't talk about list that's a minus a half and a whole point respectively so with that out of the way it's time to play wax pack heroes all right thank you very much mr scully looking at the scoreboard

32:57mark at our joss indicator which has the score not the count but our joss indicator says seven to five i am up currently yes uh battling yeah we are battling so i found this pack a random like it's a mega pack of 35 cards from tops from 2003 so we've got some physical cards again this week here in front of us so we're gonna go ahead and use these cards and see what we get i will let you decide i think i already

33:31know the answer but would you like to go first or second i'd like to go first of course you would all right that's good because that starts you off with a manager card oh good but you're gonna get point well actually you're gonna get a lot of points for it it is the manager of the expos which you're gonna get bonus points for 80s baseball aesthetics there it is frank robinson oh wow can i have his best season well you know i don't think you're gonna need it but he's a hall of famer and he's got

34:02sunglasses on here in the dugout yeah nice so that is a bonus for you let's see yeah we're not going to go into his career because we've done that elsewhere but that is a good start for you you've got a hall of fame bonus you've got the sunglasses so that's a 1.1 i've got to assume he has probably done something pop culture wise let's see here let's see frank robinson oakland boy baseball teammate in high

34:42school of veda pinson and kurt flood wow that's a pretty good team eh he was a contestant on home run derby in 1960 does that count oh yeah definitely counts home run derby is automatic points here of course a manager one of the last player managers yes oh i remember this when he pulled matt la croix in the middle of an inning when he was managing the uh the nats at one point that did not go over well i remember that too because he was their third string catcher and it allowed the astros to

35:17steal seven bases over seven innings and it committed two errors yeah it was rough yeah here's some more imdb lists credits here for jack or sorry for frank he appeared on arliss hanging with mr cooper and the cosby show no i would say nice but now it's like he also did start on an episode of yes dear as himself along with ernie banks and johnny bench nice that's weird oh how about this 1961 he pulled

35:49a 25 caliber pistol during an argument in a cincinnati restaurant probably skyline chili and he was probably mad at the chili for sucking so much people have a strong opinion on skyline chili very strong opinion on skyline they either love it or it's the worst thing ever you can guess what boat i'm in yeah i think i figured it out he was charged with concealing a weapon and was sentenced to pay 250 okay i don't think i've ever pulled any weapon at all in an argument no it's not that hard it's not

36:23that hard to not pull a weapon and it's it's not a challenge it's not but some people it's like just the worst thing ever all right so that is a 1.6 for you for frank robbins for a manager card that might be our highest ever yeah i'll take it for sure you're going up against my manager card because apparently tops i should really shuffle this because this big mega deck they put two two managers in and then they put number one like draft picks in for a couple of cards and

36:55then we've got a bunch of these cards with two players on them and a bunch of stuff i don't know i'm going to randomize them after this but i'll have you go up against my manager card mike socia of the los angeles angels of anaheim mike nova socia how have i never heard that before that's really good i like that is he halifax nova scotia that's right that's it that's the only place

37:27in nova scotia i've been to but i like that but also el jefe which is my nickname as well that's right and i are on the same page there made an effort to learn spanish in order to better communicate with rookie sensation fernando valenzuela in 1981 i like it that's pretty good uh you're gonna get home worth the bat oh that's right yeah i've got so that's a whole point yeah nothing on this card is gonna help me out though anything else that would still

38:01television appearances let's see the simpsons also was in the episode money bart but we can't do that again celebrity endorser of howard's appliance and big screen super stores right on does that count as a two-pointer i don't think so see i doubt it yeah i don't think so i have to go to the we'll have to go to the videotape i am the commissioner and i'm gonna just i'm gonna even just say no all right i'm gonna do something that would shock a young card collector

38:34jeff i'm gonna shuffle these cards hey who won that round you did clearly okay yeah you yeah you won you won that round easily i figured homer at the bat that's a one point that's and that's all i got from it because he's not a hall of famer no other appearances and nothing on the card helped me out either so it was a one point six for you versus a one for me all right all right i have now shuffled these thoroughly including the shuffle if you heard it which would have made the value of any of these

39:08cards go just plummet all right you're oh your next card is a record oh shoot your next card is a record breaker 106 rbis in 2000 tampa bay devil rays rbi season leader fred mcgriff the crime dog i was almost wearing my fred mcgriff t-shirt today but i instead went with a roy hobbs you were close and i do get the hall of fame you get the hall of fame you get the tom amansky bonus that's right right off the jump about tom amansky's videos yeah crime dog or fire dog which

39:45i love is a reference to a one day thing the first day he was in atlanta and the press box caught fire at fulton county stadium batting practice continued despite the blaze in the stadium overall 19 years in the big leagues atlanta toronto and tampa for five each and then san dago for three the cubs for two and la for one the dodgers i think he went in with a tampa or a toronto hat didn't he in the hall of fame i think i think he did i'm not sure but let's see we are looking at what year did i say this was

40:202003 so for mcgriff this was his one year at the dodgers at age 39 he appeared in 86 games hit 249 322 on base 428 slug for a 99 ops plus still hit 13 home runs 40 ribs for a 0.4 war so we'll add that to your 1.5 already 72 career stolen bases for the crime dog stolen crime that's good oh yeah see

40:55i totally did that professional podcaster that's right five-time all-star 95 world series three times silver slugger he was also the world's or the all-star game nvp at one point was traded the biggest trade was with tony fernandez to the padres for roberto alomar and joe carter also traded by the oh obviously traded by the yankees before he ever played for the yankees with mike morgan to the blue jays for dale murray worked out well for everybody interesting i did i was curious about

41:30what cappy wore into the hall of fame he has no team logo oh okay yeah it makes sense he played five years for five different teams where he was very good he hit 30 or more home runs for five different franchises that's pretty impressive there you go i don't see anything else here other than his tom amansky video was he not in the married with children strike episode i don't see anything here i need to make a list of who that was yeah but i don't see anything here i'm gonna go with it but

42:04that's a actually it's only a 1.9 for fred mcgrift that's pretty low but let's see you will be going i've got a card with two players on it future stars oh geez wow this is a good card future stars for the texas rangers i can choose between hank blaylock or mark to shara ooh now how do we do we get to choose but if they haven't played in the big leagues yet how what year do we go with their best year or no

42:34tooth yeah what do we do i don't know let's just pick a year i haven't looked this up yet let's pick a year like 2007 okay that's fair i'm gonna take to shara although he's on the dental list in a real piece of work i'm gonna go with that i think hank blaylock had a couple of good seasons but to shara had like a good career yes he did 2007 yeah let's see 2007 overall though 14 years in

43:06the big leagues for tax eight with the yankees five with the rangers two with atlanta one with the angels 2007 actually split time this is when he was traded from texas to atlanta oh i picked a good year i'm just gonna say that yeah you did he hit 306 overall a 400 on base 563 slug for a 149 ops plus he hit 30 home runs 105 ribs in a 4.6 war he is on the dental list though

43:37so that's a minus one that'll still be a 3.6 so i'm not too worried you got me traded by the texas rangers with ron mahey for elvis andrus neftali felize matt harrison and gerald saltalamakia i the i think the rangers won that trade he's got like a bunch of starters yeah i mean they were on the rangers for a long time i mentioned ron mahey because i believe he was the last guy active that

44:08was a that broke the picket lines during the 90 oh interesting yeah was it what which strike did he break the line for but i think he was the last active player that was actually made it in the big leagues after being a replacement player he is not a member of the mlbpa never made any money from the mlbpa because of that it was a 94 95 strike there you go let's see

44:40it is to share i don't want to look too much into this guy i think he's just a jerk let's see is there anything all right there's nothing here unfortunately i win the round from mark to share i don't want to talk about i'm upset just looking at the things that got him on the dental list all right we're tied at one one mark your next card is a good one with the here with the astros roy oswalt oh nice all right for you roy oswalt overall 13 years in the big leagues houston for 10 philly texas and colorado

45:15i don't remember the colorado that was 2013 he appeared in nine games and hung it up and did not pitch well shockingly enough in colorado in colorado yeah 2003 with houston he went 10 and 5 with a 2.97 wow era 127 innings pitched 116 hits allowed and he struck out 108 for an era plus of 148 and a war of 2.9 interestingly 10 and 5 and 03 and then in 04 and 05 he won 20 games in each of those

45:50seasons yeah 40 and 22 the next two seasons that's not bad 2.9 war nothing on this card is going to help you out let's see traded for not a lot anthony ghost ja happen jonathan vr they're all big leaguers i just i forgot to mention this on in bp did you see that emmanuel class a there were 48 games that they think he yes i saw that 48 this guy was making five million dollars a year and he just

46:29wanted a like an extra 10 000 bucks yeah that's crazy that is nuts if they needed someone to come in and throw a ball on the first pitch i was available for a lot less and i would have tried to throw a strike i'm still throwing a ball i know i would have tried to throw a ball because if i tried to throw a strike it would just be this big fat thing hanging over the strike zone let's see here well he opened a steakhouse in 2021 in starkville named 44 prime nice don't think that's

47:06gonna be enough for pop culture but that'll get you've got a 2.9 you will be going for me here with the d-backs is danny bautista outfielder this could be good i danny bautista had some good years yeah he did let's see in this picture nothing that's gonna help me i can't tell if he's got a mustache it's a good it's a good action picture he's taking it like a secondary lead down the third

47:37baseline but nothing else really going on there let's see overall 12 years in the big leagues five for arizona four with detroit three with atlanta and two for the fish in 2003 with arizona not good oh geez hit 275 330 on base 394 slug and 83 ops plus i said he had some good years he really didn't i must be getting him mixed up with somebody else overall i'm not even going to go through his numbers i'm just going to tell you his war was a minus 1.1 ouch that is not good nothing really to

48:16talk about transaction wise jeff parrott one game hitting streak oh okay jeff parrott hit him in the face apparently one time and broke his eye socket okay that's not a good way to play ball right there no you don't want to break your eye socket no i generally it's one of the one of the many things you would like to not break he he had an ankle injury in 2005 which ended his career it says he played for the atlantic league of professional baseball which is not affiliated with

48:47mlb for the york revolution in the first season of the team's existence after a trade he played for the camden river sharks it tells you what kind of player he is if he's in the atlantic league and he didn't play for the newark bears because the newark bears is where all of the ex-big leaguers go and he they're like we're good all right so you win that round you're up two to one and one away from another victory you will be going with outfielder for the chicago cubs cory patterson nothing on this card is going to help you out cory the brother of eric patterson played

49:24for 12 years in the big league six with the cubs three with baltimore and then cincinnati toronto st louis milwaukee and the gnats for parts of seasons in 2003 for the cubs one of his better seasons he hit 298 329 on base a 511 slug for a 114 ops plus he had 13 home runs of 55 ribs 16 sbs and a 1.8 war let's see here transactionally he was a first round draft pick third overall by the cubs in the 1998

49:57draft and oh he was traded by the blue jays with octavio dotel edwin jackson and mark zip chinsky aka scrabble for some marginal mlb talent in return and uh it says currently the manager of the brookhaven bucks in the collegiate sunbelt baseball league but i don't know if that is up to date or not and i don't see anything son of former nfl defensive back don patterson

50:30who apparently played for the lions and the giants and patterson committed to play football as a wide receiver for georgia tech before signing with the cubs georgia tech is where his father played football as well all right that'll be a 1.8 for you with cory patterson and you will be going up against pitcher for the dodgers lefty odallas perez oh i remember odallas from a time in atlanta i'm not sure if he's got a 1.8 in him but let's see oh you never know overall 10 years in the big

51:06leagues la dodgers for five atlanta for three royals for two and then the gnats in 2003 he went 12 and 12 with a 4.52 era in 30 starts 185 and a third innings pitched gave up 191 hits struck out 141 for an 89 era plus in a 0.4 war nothing in this picture is gonna help me out unfortunately oh he was traded by atlanta with andrew brown and brian jordan for gary sheffield oh wow i was there

51:43when that happened it got chefs chefs in right field after that oh wow how sad he died after falling off a ladder at his home oh in 2022 he was 44 years old that is not cool and that is really the only thing other than his baseball information here which does not help me out and that is going to hand you sir another win a w how about that i just can't get more than three games in front of you

52:18before you run off a couple we are a couple of veterans that have been battling each other for years and years you just hang close it's not until we get to somebody who's got like 16 wins that you really need to worry that's right so you just you and i are like rick flair and terry funk we just house shows just every night you and i were battling that's right and then when every now and then we'll do house shows yeah every now and then we'll do one of those barbed wire death matches that's right yeah where we actually grade the cards in some of these all right congratulations to you
