I'm your host, Exodus Chennazis, Transmedia Astronomy Educator from Hong Kong, China, and today's episode is all about air for full moon. Every year during the mid-autumn festival, we hear people talk about watching the full moon. This festival is the time to celebrate reunion and harvest. When a round bright full moon appears
0:57in the nighttime, it symbolizes family togetherness and happiness. But have you ever wondered what exactly is a full moon and how does the moon change its shape? First, a simple fact, the moon does not produce its own light. We see it because sunlight shines on its surface, reflects off, enrich our eyes on Earth. As the moon orbits our planet, its position relative to the sun changes. And that's
1:29why we see different shapes of the moon each night. This changing appearance is called the moon phase. The lunar cycle goes through 8th distance phase. In order, new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, raining gibbous, third quarter, and raining crescent. This entire cycle takes about 29.5 days. That we also call it one lunar month.
2:06Let's walk through the four major phases to understand the story better. First, in the new moon, during this phase, the moon sits between Earth and the sun. Rising with the sun, the side facing us is dark so we cannot see the moon at all. If the free body is lying up perfectly during a new moon, we get a solar eclipse. Thinking of it, that we have shared about a moon is invisible like a blank page
2:38in a story that reflects the sunlight that we are able to see it. Next is the first quarter moon. The moon has moved a quarter of the way around Earth. And we see half of its illuminated side. The right half looks bright like the letter D. While the left half is dark. This is like turning the page to cover a shape emerging. Then comes our topic today, the full moon. At this moment, Earth sits between the moon and the sun.
3:16The entire phase of the moon we see is fully lit by sunlight. The full moon rises across around the sunset and is visible all night long. The full moon is the brightest, most beautiful phase, lighting up the sun out of the sky like a perfect white dish. And when the three bodies align perfectly during a full moon, we get a lunar eclipse instead. Like nature's surprise twist in the story, the last of the full main phase is the third quarter moon.
3:53The moon has completely third quarter of its orbit. We again see half of the moon illuminated. But now the left side of the bright looks like the letter C. While the right side is dark. Through the full cycle, the moon tells us something beautiful. Change is natural, rhythmic and predictable. It moves from invisible to full visible, then back again in a cycle that has repeated for billions of years.
4:25What makes the very moon special beyond its brightness? It rise at sunset and set at sunrise. Which means you can enjoy it all night long. From a cultural perspective, the full moon connects to kindless traditions. For example, in Chinese or Asian culture, the mid-autumn festival brings families together to admire the full moon, share moon cakes, and express a wish for reunion.
4:59But this connection to the full moon goes across every civilizations. Farmers trekking harvest times, poets writing verses, navigators using moonlight to find their ways. You can even use simple tools to understand it better. Imagine using a flashlight to shine on a board in a dark room. The board representing the moon. The flashlight is the sun. You are standing on earth.
5:29By moving around, you can see lit portions which create the moon's face. Or try a face demonstrator instruments to visualize exactly when and why the full moon appears. Some schools even use a different device to simulate the entire lunar cycle to make astronomy activities interactive and being fun. If you want to observe the full moon, there's no special equipment needs.
6:02Just look up after sunset and see the beautiful round light. But if you have binoculars or small telescopes, the experience becomes even more exciting. You can see the dark things called Maya, circular craters, and mountain range that grow under the bright sunlight. The full moon reflects only around 20% of the sunlight that heat it, simply to an old coral tide.
6:36But because the night sky is so dark, it appears incredibly bright. Beyond beauty and tradition, the full moon reminds us that everything in space follows patterns. The moon controls ocean tides, support wildlife activities, and marks times on our calendars. It's a celestial clock that never stops ticking, yet it never fails to inspire wonder. So this week, when you look up and see the full moon rising over Hong Kong, pause for a moment.
7:11Think about what's happening in space, how the sun becomes a giant lamp, how the moon becomes a mirror, and how earth catches that reflect light exactly white for us, to see perfection. The full moon is not just a phase, it's a reminder of balance, timing, and the beauty of cosmic dance. Next time, when the moon becomes new again, think about how it will slowly grow, wax, and turn to fullness.
